Should I give OESTROVUM to my horse?
The most common cause of infertility in mares is an unhealthy uterus.
64% of clinically healthy mares have some degree of inflammation in the uterus (Lehmann et al., 2011)
OESTROVUM is a feed supplement to support a healthy uterus and to improve fertility in mares.
OESTROVUM is a good choice to support mares
- before and during pregnancy (1st trimester);
- with fertility issues;
- in their senior years (12 +); and
- with "marish" behaviour.
How does OESTROVUM work?
An unhealthy uterus and fertility issues in horses are often caused by a hormonal imbalance.
The liver regulates the balance of hormones. It transforms or removes any excess from the body.
If the liver cannot do this properly, there is the risk of hormonal imbalances, with a negative impact on the uterus (1,2).
For optimal hormone balance, production and breakdown must be in sync. The breakdown of hormones is regulated by the liver in two phases.
BREAKDOWN OF HORMONES
Broccoli powder helps to reduce the formation of harmful estrogen intermediates during breakdown in the liver in phase I and stimulates the breakdown enzymes in phase II (3,4).
Folic acid, vitamin B12, choline and betaine are important nutrients for the proper functioning of methylation (phase II) (5,6).
Cysteine is a building block of the very powerful antioxidant glutathione. When methylation is disturbed, glutathione production will also be disturbed, leading to cell damage and reduced fertility (7).
Natural vitamin E is also a very good antioxidant that helps to prevent cell damage (8).
PRODUCTION OF HORMONES
Linseed reduces the production of estrogens by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, responsible for the formation of estrogen from testosterone (9).
An optimal development of the embryo in the uterus through the supplementation of folic acid, vitamin B12, choline and betaine is of great importance to optimise the genetic potential of the foal in his adult life (10).
